Learning Targets:

  • Identify emerging considerations and consequences of global and local trends, relating to increasing number and population proportions for the older person.

  • Define Dermatosclerosis – Skin Frailty Syndrome as described by Kaya & Saurat (2007,2008), based on observable aging skin changes.

  • Overview the progressive severity, significance and impact of Dermatoporosis - Stage I to Stage IV.

  • Examine current known prevalence of Dermatoporosis in > 65yrs olds.

  • Differentiate cutaneous (Stage IIIa) and subcutaneous haematoma (Stage IIIb / IV) and describe pathological impact of haematoma on wound bed & cells.

  • Describe high risk older person groups at risk of Stage IIIb & Stage IV Dermatoporosis (Deep Dissecting Haematoma - without & with skin necrosis).

  • Examine known sequela and complications associated with late vs early identification / diagnosis, and delayed / inadequate surgical intervention.

  • Reflect on key learnings for individual HCPS, teams, organisations (including Accident & Emergency departments) to:
         1. Raise awareness of
         2. Minimise risk for (falls, anticoagulants) &
         3. Recognise early and initiate appropriate action to address the medical / surgical emergency associated with Stage IIIb &             Stage IV Dermatoporosis - Deep Dissecting Haematoma.
