Battling Biofilm: Standing up to a formidable foe!
Better care for hard-to-heal wounds
Short Course Overview
Biofilm infections are a major barrier to wound healing, particularly in wounds that should otherwise heal. Biofilms are the 'natural form of bacterial existence and are highly resistant to host defences, antibiotics, and antimicrobial agents' - (Hurlow, J. Bowler, P. 2022). Their presence causes delayed healing, chronic inflammation, and a harmful microenvironment, leading to hard-to-heal wounds.
The costs of biofilm infections—pain, infection risk, tissue damage, and non-healing—are significant. Since 2017, global efforts have focused on raising awareness and improving biofilm management in chronic wounds. This course provides foundational knowledge on biofilms, current treatment recommendations, and emerging strategies to improve patient outcomes.
Are we doing enough to manage biofilm-related infections? Join this course to stay updated on biofilm care and learn how to minimize risks and enhance wound healing through evidence-based practices.
Learning Targets
Define biofilm as it relates to wound & skin, considering terminology based on current understanding.
Describe microbial phenotype (physical state) and the impact & influence on wound infection type.
Compare & contrast acute and chronic wound infection, considering unique variations in clinical practice.
Identify signs & symptoms of local (overt & covert), spreading and systemic wound infection.
Examine clinical indicators of biofilm and chronic inflammation in the context of known prevalence in non-healing wounds.
Overview the stages & known time frames of biofilm formation & reformation and describe strategic steps for everyday practice to disrupt & supress reformation.
Identify debridement as a globally recognised ‘non-negotiable’ in the prevention & treatment of hard-to-heal healable wounds, to address the formidable foe - biofilm.
